Walnut – Bastogne Walnut, also known as Paradox Walnut
Some of the most beautiful wood we’ve worked with, Bastogne Walnut, is a rare find for us here in Phoenix. We have been lucky enough to be able to bring some of this hybrid walnut in from California and have some large, very beautiful slabs available now. (posted 7/20, so check for availability)
Just why is it so special? Bastogne Walnut is a cross between Claro Walnut and English Walnut, but what is interesting is that the hybrid grows faster than either of the parent species and yields harder and stronger lumber—with grain that looks almost like a mix of the two parent trees. But, because the Bastogne Walnut doesn’t produce many walnuts and the taste is not as good as other strains, growers have not planted large numbers of these trees.
Thus, this beautiful, hard and strong lumber—nicknamed “Paradox” in woodworking circles—is highly sought after and wonderful to work with.
